The history of an autograph is crucial when determining its authenticity and value. In the case of Q1, the provenance is particularly strong thanks to the detailed documentation that accompanies it. The signature was obtained by the late grandmother of the owner of the autograph, whose name and surname are recorded, providing an important link to the origin of the autograph. Furthermore, she has provided a personal account of the circumstances under which the signature was obtained.

According to her account, she was holding the notepad while the signature was written, which gives the autograph a unique context and history. This personal connection to the signing event adds to the autograph’s significance and value. Additionally, the slightly shaky and irregular strokes of the signature are consistent with known physical characteristics of autographs from this period, further supporting its authenticity. In summary, the combination of documented provenance and a unique personal history make this autograph a highly valuable piece of memorabilia.

    Processing the signatures

We converted the photos of signatures into squared B/W images, to use as input for our neural network, which works with sub-images of 256x256 pixels. 70% of the authentic signatures were separated for training, 10% for validation, and the remaining 20% were reserved for testing. We placed in a different folder the unknown signatures the customer provided us with.

The paper has taken on a yellowish hue, which is often seen in old paper due to oxidation and the breakdown of lignin in the paper fibers. This discoloration adds to the authenticity of the autograph, as it indicates that the paper is indeed old and has not been artificially aged or manipulated to deceive potential buyers.

In addition to the discoloration, the paper has also suffered physical damage over time. The bottom right corner of the paper is missing, leaving behind small, jagged pieces. This damage could have been caused by any number of factors, such as exposure to moisture or handling over time. While the damage may detract from the aesthetic appeal of the autograph, it can actually increase its value ... tap the blue square to read the report:
